Abstract

"Improvement in efficiency is one of the major design criteria for the development of future brake system. The efficiency of the existing hydraulic brake system can be increased by minimizing the losses in the system. This can be achieved firstly by identifying the subsystems which have the scope for improvement. To attain this goal, it is necessary to understand the behavior of the state of the art hydraulic brake system. The brake system is assessed using characteristics like pedal travel, pedal force, boosted force and hydraulic pressure at the wheels. A brake system test stand is developed to investigate these characteristics by measuring different physical quantities with the help of various sensors. The aim of the thesis is to develop control concepts for the hydraulic brake system test bench which exhibits the reproducibility of the measurements. The predefined test routines are applied to a hydraulic brake system in real time with the help of an actuator and a controller. A conventional control strategy is not able to handle this requirement due to nonlinearities and variations in the system. An adaptive control strategy is developed to overcome the limitations of conventional controllers. Depending on the variable that is controlled, three control strategies are conceptualized which are force control, travel control and pressure control. The control strategies are first designed and tested using Matlab / Simulink. A simulation environment including the complete system is developed for this purpose. Finally the control strategies are implemented on the actual system using a CompactRIO real time controller and LabVIEW software from National Instruments."
