Abstract

"The objective of this study was to efficiently optimize a single-cylinder diesel engine with regard to the emissions, fuel consumption und combusion noise. The Method, used in this thesis is called Response Surface Method and includes mathematical and statistical tools as well as the Design of Experiments (DoE). A software tool (AModA: Automatic Model Analyzer) was deveolped to automate the optimization process and sucessefully implemented. The tool is based on an objective function, which minimizes the problem of a Multi-Response Optimization to a problem of 'finding a minimum on a hypersurface'. The optimized engine configuration included the following operating parameters: Injection Pressure, Main Injection Begin, EGR-Rate, EGR-Cooling, Pilot Injection Timing and Pilot Injection Quantity. Engine experiments, based on the Central Composite Faced - Design (CCF), have been carried out on the test bench. A reduction of the test bench time of more than 60% is achieved with this method. Furthermore, the developed software tool automated the 'offline' optimization process."
